The Japanese government has launched a campaign to support the resumption of nuclear reactor operations following the Fukushima crisis. The PR drive came as 15 people were confirmed to have suffered internal radiation exposure. | Some Cash Strapped States Dropping Tourism Marketing

By the end of this week, Washington will close its official tourism agency and become the only state to cease all state funding for self-promotion. It`s one example of how states are coping with budget deficits brought on by slumping tax revenue. In May, the Legislature eliminated the remaining funding for the tourism agency, about $2 million for the coming fiscal year. State support had been as high as $7 million. | Institutional Investors Have $1.1 Trillion in Hedge Funds in Q1

Institutional investors globally had about $1.1 trillion invested in hedge funds at the end of the first quarter, according to new research released Monday by Citi Prime Finance. Institutions such as pension funds, endowments, foundations and sovereign wealth funds accounted for roughly half of total hedge fund assets managed globally as of March 31, Citi researchers found. As of the same date, pension funds globally accounted for 53% or $594 billion of the $1.1 trillion of institutional investments in hedge funds, compared to 27% or $297 billion for endowments and foundations, and 20% or $220 billion for sovereign wealth funds ...

| Exhanges: Nasdaq Urges Clearing Choice after NYSE Merger Deal

EU regulators should ensure investors continue to have a choice of clearing houses if NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Boerse get approval to combine, a senior executive from failed suitor Nasdaq OMX Group said on Monday. The risk is high that the $9 billion merger of NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Boerse would shut out other players from the exchange-listed derivatives market, said Magnus Billing, Nasdaq`s chief counsel for Europe. "Regulators should safeguard a competitive market. Behavioural remedies are not sufficient," he said in an interview with Reuters. "Everything traded on Liffe should be cleared elsewhere and thereby at least maintain existing competitive restraints," he said, referring to NYSE Euronext`s Liffe futures and options market. | PR Talent Fleeing Abroad? New Research Says 75% of PR Students Would Go Overseas for Work

Research conducted by UK based Moonlight Media found that 73 percent of PR students polled would go abroad to advance their careers. Forty-seven percent said they would go to the U.S. and 29 percent said the U.K. The firm polled 294 PR students at universities including those across Europe, in the U.S., Australia, and across parts of Central and South America, Asia, and Africa. The top two reasons given for choosing to go abroad was the image of the host country and the opportunity to learn professional skills, each with 35 percent of the response. ...

| In PR Category, PR Shops Come up Short While Ad Agencies Stand Tall

It`s tough to dispute the importance of PR, either in the marketing mix or in its third year at the Cannes Lions Festival. Agency holding companies all reported annual PR increases in 2010. And this year the category received 819 entries at Cannes, up more than 40%. So why, of the 105 campaigns on the shortlist, were only about 20 entered by PR agencies, compared to more than 45 by ad agencies? Creative shops were especially prevalent in the "Best use of social media" and "Best integrated campaign led by PR" categories. | Ban Junk Food Ads on TV, Doctors Say

The American Academy of Pediatrics has come out in favor of a ban on advertising junk food to children. In a statement Monday, the organization said ads for junk food are pervasive on children`s television and online. Children already are sedentary from watching so much TV and using computers or gaming systems, the organization said. Adding commercials into the mix makes everything worse, because then the kids want to snack on junk food even as they sit and stare at screens. The July issue of the organization`s magazine, Pediatrics, also also included a study on the effect of food advertising on children. ...
